Be My Eyes Mode on Meta Wayfarers

I just noticed there’s a feature called Be My Eyes on Meta glasses that’s pretty interesting. I didn’t realize that was a thing.

I knew there’s guidance possible for Google Maps and Gpt vision (as far as audio guidance using vision/camera on the phone), but I didn’t realize there is also Be My Eyes feature as well.

I’ve never tried it, but it seems like a good idea, at first impression, for people who have low sight.

“Call a Volunteer”

“Those who are blind or low vision can connect to a network of Be My Eyes' sighted volunteers to help complete their everyday tasks”.

Here’s a few screens to explain it better:

Also, in addition to using the Meta glasses with the Be My Eyes capability, you can just call a friend and let them look through your eyes/view/glasses. It’s a livestream view through Messenger.

Video Calling with Ray-Ban Meta Glasses: Sharing Your View with Friends

Yes, you absolutely can call friends directly and let them see through your Ray-Ban Meta glasses! This feature works completely separately from Be My Eyes and offers a personal way to share your perspective with people you know, rather than volunteers.

Video Calling Capabilities with Ray-Ban Meta Glasses

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses support direct video calling with friends and family through two major platforms:

WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger Integration

You can make video calls to your contacts using either WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, and during these calls, you can switch to showing your glasses' point-of-view (POV)7. This functionality allows friends to literally see what you're seeing, creating a much more immersive experience than traditional video calls5.

As one Reddit user mentioned, "I call frequently on WhatsApp using them. I turn on the camera so my friends and family can see from my POV on the calls (basically streaming to them)"12.

How It Works

When you're on a video call through WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger:

  1. The call initially uses your phone's camera (front or rear facing)

  2. During the call, you can double-press the capture button on your glasses to switch to the glasses' camera view7

  3. Double-press again to switch back to your phone camera5

This allows you to seamlessly transition between showing your face and showing what you're looking at without ending the call or changing apps57.

Setting Up Video Calling on Ray-Ban Meta Glasses

To enable this feature, you'll need to connect your messaging apps to the Meta View app:

  1. Open the Meta View app on your phone

  2. Go to Settings > Communication (or select your glasses and then tap Communication)

  3. Connect WhatsApp and/or Facebook Messenger to enable video calling functionality82

Advantages Over Livestreaming

While livestreaming to Facebook or Instagram (which you mentioned knowing about) broadcasts to multiple followers, video calling offers:

  1. Privacy: Only the person you're calling can see your view

  2. Interaction: Real-time two-way conversation rather than one-way broadcasting

  3. Convenience: No need to set up a public livestream for quick visual assistance48

Hands-Free Experience

One of the most powerful aspects of using Ray-Ban Meta glasses for video calls is that it's completely hands-free. Once you've switched to the glasses view:

  • You can lock your phone screen and put it away

  • Your hands remain free for whatever activity you're doing

  • The person on the call continues to see through your glasses75

This makes it especially useful when you need to use your hands while showing someone what you're looking at or doing5.

Comparing with Be My Eyes

While Be My Eyes connects you with random volunteers who can assist with visual tasks, video calling with your Ray-Ban Meta glasses allows you to:

  • Connect with people you already know and trust

  • Share personal or sensitive information you might not want to share with strangers

  • Get assistance from friends who already understand your preferences and situation48

Conclusion

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses offer a versatile way to share your perspective with friends and family through direct video calls, going beyond the livestreaming capabilities you were already aware of. Whether you need assistance with something, want to share an experience, or simply connect in a more immersive way, the video calling feature provides a personal and convenient alternative to both Be My Eyes and public livestreaming.
